Hilton Head Island is a world-renowned
barrier island on the southeast coast of the United States, known for its
attention to nature and surroundings.
Hilton Head Island hosts the PGA Tour with the newly renamed "Verizon
Heritage of Golf" (formerly the MCI Classic Heritage of Golf) in early
April. Many people come to Hilton Head Island for the beaches, golf,
tennis, shopping, fishing, and many more great activities.

Beaches - by Glen McCaskey
One cannot but be struck by the remarkable width and constant changing of
the beaches on Hilton Head. In most places, it is not unusual for the beach
to be a hundred yards wide and the waters passive lap dogs at low tide, but
aggressive, swirling and noisy just hours later. It is intriguing to think
that where you walked along the water’s edge in the morning might be under
eight or ten feet of water by sunset, that dolphins may be fishing and
leaping out of the water right where you stood. The shore here is one of
the most dynamic on the east coast.

Island Eating - By Glen McCaskey
Indian chiefs (Cassiques) used to dine on Palmetto Trees, reserved for them
because harvesting “Heart of Palm,” as we call it today, would kill the
entire tree. The Indians also feasted on Island oysters, which apparently
were delectable enough that unknown native tribes used to visit here for
months-long encampments thousands of years before Indians took up
residence. Several Island Indian Shell Rings are surviving vestiges of that
presence. The
Indians have nothing on visitors today as local oysters are still mighty
popular (during “R” months). Island seafood fare is now supplemented with
both the volume and diversity of options one usually finds in cities, the
benefit of being a resort community. Many nationalities and cuisine
cultures are represented, but don’t miss the fresh local fare either – crab,
shrimp,
fresh catches of the day, Low Country Boil and the Indian’s favorite
shellfish. But please, don’t eat our Palmetto trees!

| In Case You Missed It: |
Fly Fishing for Dolphins
About two hours before low water the ebbing tide leaves the last stalks of spartina high and dry in the saltmarsh. Soon, smaller creeks will dry up, and for the next four hours highly prized mullet, packed into tight schools, will cling nervously to the muddy banks as if willing the tide to return and give them back their sanctuary amongst the grass. Vulnerable but fast and numerous, most will survive. Any moment though, highly skilled groups of dolphins will stealthily enter the creeks, the shallows will provide no shelter, the calm will be broken by powerful explosions and the marauding will begin.
